In order for the organs in your body to work properly, blood must flow to and from your heart continuously and smoothly. However, blood must also quickly shut off when you get a cut or injury to prevent any major loss of blood.

Blood clots are healthy and can save a life when they stop unnecessary bleeding, but they can also form when they aren’t needed and can cause heart attacks, strokes, or other serious medical problems. It’s important to remember that a blood clot can be treated successfully if discovered before it causes a larger problem.

A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that forms in a leg vein that either partially or completely blocks the flow of blood. A DVT can develop if you have certain medical conditions that affect how your blood clots. Symptoms of a DVT include swelling and pain in the affected area of your leg.

A DVT is a very serious condition that can lead to life-threatening complications such as a pulmonary embolism (PE). A PE is when a blood clot in your veins breaks loose, travels through your bloodstream and becomes lodged in your lungs, which blocks blood flow. Symptoms of a PE include shortness of breath, chest pain, feeling light headed, coughing up blood, and a rapid pulse. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

30-40 mmHg knee length compression stockings are prescribed to manage the acute symptoms of DVT and to help prevent the long-term effects. Please talk with your doctor or healthcare provider before wearing compression 20 mmHg and greater.
