Compression Socks for Nurses

Compression socks, along with a good pair of shoes, can change how a nurse feels throughout his or her day.

After working a 12 hour shift on your feet, swelling and pain is almost guaranteed. While compression has certain medical benefits like helping to prevent varicose veins, or dealing with Lymphedema etc. compression stockings can make an incredible difference to those who don’t have these symptoms or venous diseases.

Graduated Compression
Graduated compression means the strongest support of the garment is at the ankle, and is gradually decreased towards the top (closest to the knee). This promotes blood flow up towards the heart, so fresh blood and oxygen can then travel back to the legs.

Benefits of Wearing Compression for Nurses

  • They help reduce swelling in the feet and legs.
  • They improve blood flow and oxygenation.
  • They help improve recovery time of achy/sore muscles after a long day on your feet.
  • They don’t roll down your legs, meaning they stay put and won’t slip or slide down.
  • They are antimicrobial, so your feet won’t stink after a shift in your shoes.
  • They are breathable, so they won’t make your legs feel hot or itchy.

Nurses who are on their feet all day should be seeking 15-20 mmHg of compression. Anything above should be recommended by a medical professional. We offer a multitude of different brands so you can choose the compression socks that are just right for you. Shop our compression stockings here.

I have found that ankle height cotton are easier for me to put on. I am diabetic. Do I need the compression for effect? I have purchased sigvaris compression in the past.
